Gutters and Downspouts done the way it should be
Gutters are the least glamorous part of a building envelope and the part most likely to cause expensive damage when undersized. A Triangle summer thunderstorm can drop an inch of rain in under an hour, and the five inch gutter with two downspouts that the builder installed was sized for an average, not for that.
What we see most is water overshooting the gutter at valleys, pouring behind the gutter because the drip edge was never detailed, and downspouts discharging directly against the foundation. All three are fixable, and none of them require replacing the roof.
We form gutter on site from coil, so there are no seams except at corners and outlets. Seams are where gutters leak, so fewer of them is the entire point.

When Gutters and Downspouts Is The Right Call
- Water overshooting in heavy rain. Almost always undersized gutter, a valley dumping into a short run, or a pitch problem.
- Staining or rot on the fascia. Water is getting behind the gutter, usually a drip edge detail that was never done.
- Gutters pulling away from the house. Spike and ferrule hangers working loose, or the fascia behind them has softened.
- Erosion or mulch washing out below the roofline. Discharge is landing where it should not, and the same water is against your foundation.
- Damp in a crawl space or basement. Roof drainage is the first thing to check and the cheapest thing to fix.
- Ice in the gutter during a cold snap. Less common here than further north, but standing water in a gutter that does not drain will freeze and pull the gutter apart.

Are gutter guards worth it?
It depends entirely on your trees. Under mature pines and oaks, which describes a great deal of the Triangle, good micro mesh guards genuinely reduce cleaning from several times a year to roughly once. Under an open lot they are largely unnecessary, and we will tell you so. The cheap reverse curve and foam inserts sold door to door are not worth the money in either case.
Do I need six inch gutters or is five inch fine?
Five inch is fine on a small simple roof with plenty of downspouts. On anything with large slopes, valleys or steep pitch, six inch with three by four downspouts is the difference between a gutter that works in a Triangle downpour and one that overshoots. The price difference is small, so we default to six.
Can you match my existing gutter colour?
Usually, from a standard coil range. Older or custom colours sometimes cannot be matched exactly, and aluminium fades slightly with age, so a partial replacement may show a difference. We will show you the colour sample against your existing run before we form anything.
Should gutters be replaced at the same time as the roof?
If they are near the end of their life, yes, because the drip edge and the gutter have to work together and doing both at once lets us detail that junction correctly. If the gutters are sound we simply work off the roof and leave them alone.
Why does water pour behind my gutter?
Almost always a missing or badly installed drip edge. Water leaving the shingle follows the underside of the edge by surface tension and runs down the fascia instead of dropping into the gutter. It is a straightforward fix and it stops the fascia rot that follows it.
Do you clean gutters?
We clean as part of gutter and roofing projects, and we will clear a blockage we find during an inspection. We are not a standalone gutter cleaning service, and for routine seasonal cleaning we would rather point you to someone who does only that.
